چکیده

We consider the linear global stability of the boundary-layer flow over a rotating sphere. Our results suggest that a self-excited linear global mode can exist when the sphere rotates sufficiently fast, with properties fixed by the flow at latitudes between approximately 55°–65° from the pole (depending on the rotation rate). A neutral curve for global linear instabilities is presented with critical Reynolds number consistent with existing experimentally measured values for the appearance of turbulence. The existence of an unstable linear global mode is in contrast to the literature on the rotating disk, where it is expected that nonlinearity is required to prompt the transition to turbulence. Despite both being susceptible to local absolute instabilities, we conclude that the transition mechanism for the rotating-sphere flow may be different to that for the rotating disk. © 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. The Convective Instability of Boundary-layer Flows over Rotating Spheroids

The continuous development of spinning projectiles and other industrial applications has led to the need to understand the laminar boundary-layer flow and subsequent onset of transition over the general family of rotating spheroids. We begin by finding the laminar boundary-layer flow over a general spheroid. In particular, we distinguish between prolate and oblate spheroids and use an appropria...

Global stability of the rotating-disc boundary layer with an axial magnetic field

A numerical study is conducted to investigate the influence of a uniform axial magnetic field on the global linear stability of the rotating-disc boundary layer. Simulation results obtained using a radially homogenized base flow were found to be in excellent agreement with an earlier linear stability analysis, which indicated that an axial magnetic field can locally suppress both convective and...

Insight into the Boundary Layer Flows of Free Convection and Heat Transfer of Nanofluids over a Vertical Plate using Multi-Step Differential Transformation Method

This paper presents an insight into the boundary layer of free convection and heat transfer of nanofluids over a vertical plate at very low and high Prandtl number. Suitable similarity variables are used to convert the governing systems of nonlinear partial differential equations of the flow and heat transfer to systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations which are solved using multi-s...

Heat and mass transfer of nanofluid over a linear stretching surface with Viscous dissipation effect

Boundary Layer Flow past a stretching surface with constant wall temperature, of a nanofluid is studied for heat transfer characteristics. The system of partial differential equations describing such a flow is subjected to similarity transformations gives rise to a boundary value problem involving a system of ordinary differential equations. This system is solved by a shooting method. Effect of...
